John Sexton and our dear David Leebron were both the Deans of NYU Law and Columbia Law respectively around the same time. But Time magazine overlooks Rice’s massive changes and improvements to praise Sexton as President of NYU for all that he has done.
Its like praising someone for winning the lottery and saying what a good businessman he is.
Oh it must be so hard being the President of NYU, what with its massive alumni base, media connections, and multimillion dollar donations. Not to mention the free PR NYU constantly gets for, gosh being NYU.
And what specifically is Time praising Sexton for? Opening a branch in Abu Dhabi. Its only so convenient that the campus was funded by the UAE government. Really hard work fundraising there.
On the other hand, Leebron is working uphill at a university with little history of fundraising and a localist mentality, trying to get Rice to be recognized as a truly national and international school. Now there is a challenge.
So, Time. Get outside the East Coast every once in a while, and not just to condescendingly praise whatever farmville hick school you can find.
